What to Bring to Your Notary Appointment
Preparing for your notary appointment takes just a few minutes, but getting it right saves time and prevents delays. Here's exactly what you need to bring and what to expect.
Required Items
Valid Government-Issued Photo ID
Every signer must present a current, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, military ID, or permanent resident card. The name on your ID must match the name on the document being notarized.
The Unsigned Document
Do not sign your document before the appointment. The notary must witness the actual signing. If you have already signed, the document may need to be reprinted.
All Required Signers Present
Every person whose signature needs to be notarized must be present at the appointment with their own valid ID. A notary cannot notarize a signature that was not witnessed in person.
Any Required Witnesses
Some documents — such as wills and certain powers of attorney — require one or two witnesses in addition to the notary. Check your document's requirements in advance. Witnesses must also bring valid ID.
